WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Manor girls win Region 4A semifinal against Warhill

“I was there for both of the court dates where watching this proceeding and watching these kids go through that emotional trauma of being stripped of something that was negated from them illegally,” said Darrell Redmond, executive director of the nonprofit Give Back 2 Da Block and Manor fan, “so being able to watch them come through that situation, be able to prevail and then come out here and execute the way they are is just exciting.”

A Portsmouth judge ruled Monday that the team is allowed to continue postseason play and that a previously ineligible player is eligible.

Manor girls basketball team can continue in state tournament

Manor initially was forced to forfeit a Virginia High School League Class 4 Region quarterfinal game it had won against Gloucester High School because of that previously ineligible player.

Court testimony revealed that the reason why this student was ineligible was because they were a transfer from another school and did not have a waiver, which made them ineligible for postseason play.

The judge ultimately ruled that VHSL rules were not followed when it came to allowing that player to appeal against the ineligibility findings.

After Manor forfeited, Gloucester went on to play Warhill and lost. But because of the court ruling, Warhill and Manor also had to play Wednesday night — what was originally going to happen before Manor had to forfeit.

“They work hard all season,” said Manor fan PJ Howard. “They are happy they get to just continue to play basketball and win the state championship,”

Warhill basketball parent Jennifer Gray said she’s proud of how her daughter played Wednesday night.

“It’s been a frustrating path,” Gray said. “You know, we wish it didn’t come down to this, but they showed up to see what they could bring on the court today. So unfortunately, it didn’t go our way.”

Now, the Manor girls will head to the state tournament.

“We just want to win, man,” said Manor girls basketball coach Roger Smith. “The kids just wanted to get back on the court. They had the opportunity to get back on the court. We’re happy for that.”
