The Kansas City Chiefs won't know for sure yet if Travis Kelce is coming back as opposed to retiring.

But the latest news coming out in rumors on Sunday is a major update for what's going to happen with the legendary tight end.

This is what The Athletic's Dianna Russini wrote on X on Sunday:

"Based on conversations with several teams, TE Travis Kelce appears motivated to return to play a 14th season. The Chiefs remain very much in the mix to re-sign the three-time Super Bowl champion and four-time All-Pro."

That's huge on a number of levels.

The first is that it suggests Kelce doesn't want to retire. From a competitive standpoint, that makes sense. He wouldn't want to go out on a 6-11 season.

The Chiefs will have to navigate the potential that Patrick Mahomes (torn ACL) isn't ready for Week 1, but they'll figure that part out. It's a bit easier if Kelce is back.

The other element, though, is that Kelce's contract ended with the conclusion of the 2025 NFL season. He is a free agent.

Kelce could choose to sign elsewhere, if he so desired.

So this is a real a two-pronged operation. First, the Chiefs need to know Kelce isn't retiring. Then, they need to secure his signature on a new contract.

This report is the best news the Chiefs have gotten on both of those stretches so far.

They'll keep crossing their fingers that this holds true and they get their great tight end back for another year.
