Rutgers made major changes to the defensive side of the ball — on and off the field.
The Scarlet Knights hired Travis Johansen to be the new defensive coordinator. Head coach Greg Schiano also brought in many new pieces through the transfer portal.

On top of all the new additions, Rutgers might be getting back two veterans along the defensive line.
Schiano gave updates on defensive tackles Keshon Griffin and Zaire Angoy during his first spring press conference last week.
Griffin is set to return while the team awaits a decision on Angoy. Both players petitioned for another year of eligibility. A decision has not come yet on Angoy but he is able to participate in practices, which he did in the winter as well.
“Keshon has been cleared,” Schiano said. “He is a go. We’re still waiting on Zaire but it’s legal for him to practice. He’s participated in the whole winter program and I’m hopeful that will happen soon.”
Griffin has spent the last five years at Rutgers. He played in just five games over his first three years, but appeared in 25 over the last two years. In 2025, Griffin totaled 13 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Angoy has also played in 25 games over the last two seasons. In those games, he has 24 tackles.
