Jorge Martin is back on top of the MotoGP standings for the first time since 2024, but winning the championship isn’t his main focus right now.

After an injury-hit 2025, Martin has returned to form this season. Aprilia’s support has been key, giving him the machinery to compete at the front again, and he made it count with a victory at the United States Grand Prix.

Martin took the Sprint race win thanks to a dramatic final-lap move on Francesco Bagnaia. The Ducati rider had controlled much of the race until Martin seized his chance in the closing moments.

Bagnaia acknowledged that Martin was fully deserving of the win, which marked Martin’s 17th Sprint race victory – a new record. Marco Bezzecchi also crashed late in what was already shaping up as one of Aprilia’s best weekends yet.

Jorge Martin isn’t thinking about the 2026 MotoGP championship

Martin is just a point clear at the top of the standings ahead of Sunday’s race. Aprilia’s RS-GP looks capable of going head-to-head with Ducati for the title, and Martin could well be in contention for his second MotoGP championship.

But that’s not something on his mind right now. Speaking to Sky Italia after the race, Martin said he wasn’t even focused on winning it back in 2024 with Pramac when he edged out Bagnaia by 10 points.

“I won in 2024 and wasn’t thinking about the championship,” he said. “There’s no point in thinking about it or not thinking about it; you just have to go out there, finish the races, and score points.”

“Then, at the end of the year, if I have a chance to win it, I’ll think about it but right now there’s no point in thinking about it. If I can win, I’ll take it. For me, being effective is what matters.”

Jorge Martin says he is better than ever

Martin looks to be back to his old self in 2026, and his past issues with Aprilia seem to be well behind him. The team and rider now appear to be working together smoothly, and the Spaniard believes he is performing at a higher level than before.

He feels he’s riding better now than during his 2024 title-winning campaign. With the RS-GP giving him confidence, Martin is in a position to challenge both his teammate and Marc Marquez for this year’s championship.

But there’s an interesting twist: Martin is expected to join Yamaha in 2027. He moved quickly to secure a deal for next season, as Bagnaia is set to take his spot at Aprilia alongside Bezzecchi.

The switch hasn’t been officially announced yet, but staying within the Noale setup isn’t out of the question. His only path back to Aprilia would be through Trackhouse Racing MotoGP Team, which currently has openings on its roster.
