Mumbai: Germany is steadily becoming one of the most sought-after higher education destinations for students from Maharashtra, as growing awareness, affordable education options and strong career prospects continue to reshape study abroad choices.

According to recent data from DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), around 59,419 Indian students are currently studying in Germany. The number is witnessing an annual growth of nearly 25 to 30 per cent, reflecting the country’s rising appeal among Indian applicants.

Education consultants say Maharashtra is playing a major role in this trend, with increasing numbers of students from Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Navi Mumbai exploring German universities for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Maharashtra students looking beyond traditional destinations

For years, countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia dominated student preferences. Germany is making rapid strides, however, as more students search for countries offering quality education at affordable rates.

The growing influx of students from Maharashtra applies to all disciplines, including engineering, management, arts, and specialized courses.
Experts say the shift is being driven by better awareness about German universities, improved access to language training and relatively favourable visa procedures.

Strong demand from mumbai and pune

Germany-focused higher education consultancy YES Germany said it has seen significant interest from students across Maharashtra through its centres in Andheri, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune.

Anuj Deshmukh, Director, YES Germany, said Maharashtra has emerged as a strong market for Germany-focused education.

“Maharashtra is a very strong destination for Germany-focused higher education. Through our centres in Andheri, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Baner and Viman Nagar, we assist around 700 to 800 students every year in pursuing higher studies in Germany,” he said.

He added that nearly 60 per cent of student conversions come from the Mumbai region, while the remaining 40 per cent come from Pune. Deshmukh also noted that growing familiarity with the German language has become a major factor behind the rising interest.

Why Germany is attracting students

Germany’s popularity is also linked to the wide range of academic options available. The country offers nearly 20,000 courses, many of them in globally recognised institutions.

In addition to academics, students are drawn by Germany’s stable economy, career opportunities and access to the wider European job market after graduation.

Experts say many students now view Germany not just as a place to study, but as a gateway to long-term global careers.

Dr. Latika Chaudhary, CEO, YES Germany, said students from Maharashtra are increasingly considering Germany because it offers a balanced mix of quality, affordability and future opportunities.

“Germany is now becoming a very relevant destination for Maharashtra students since it combines academic excellence, affordability, accessibility and strong career pathways,” she said.

Germany’s educational pull is also supported by strong business ties with Maharashtra. Government data shows the state accounted for nearly 49 per cent of German FDI inflows into India between 2019 and 2024, making it the leading recipient in the country.

Industry observers say this economic relationship further strengthens Germany’s image among students looking for international education linked to employment opportunities.
