The 2025 AL Cy Young runner-up has not been consistently dominant this season, but he was coming off a strong performance in which he didn't allow a run against the Orioles and finished with seven strikeouts in six innings.

It's another tough blow for Boston's pitching staff after the team recently lost Sonny Gray to a hamstring injury. How will the Red Sox survive without one of baseball's best pitchers?

Here are the latest updates on Crochet's status and his projected return date.

Garrett Crochet injury updates

On April 29, Crochet was placed on the 15-day IL with left shoulder inflammation (retroactive to April 26).

Crochet noted that he started to feel some fatigue in his last start, a 17-1 win over Baltimore on April 25, but he was able to "grind through it."

"It kind of just makes more sense to get ahead of it now so I'm not playing catch-up the rest of the season," Crochet said.

On May 1, Crochet's MRI showed nothing besides inflammation. He is shut down from throwing for a few days.

Though he is not available for the three-game series against the Tigers from May 4 to May 6, Crochet made the trip to Detroit to continue his rehab, per MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

Crochet is "pretty confident" that he will rejoin Boston's rotation when he is eligible to come off the injured list. MassLive's Chris Cotillo reported that Crochet's shoulder discomfort is "trending better on a daily basis."

"Saw some pretty good development over the course of the past three days," Crochet said. "The plan is just to continue to challenge it while also giving it time to recover."

Crochet is eligible to return during the second week of May, barring any setbacks in his recovery.

How Garrett Crochet injury impacts Red Sox's rotation

Boston is already down one starting pitcher in Gray, who hasn't appeared in a game since April 20. Now, interim manager Chad Tracy will also have to fill Crochet's slot in the rotation.

The Red Sox will rely on typical starters Brayan Bello, Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez to step up, and they will likely keep Payton Tolle in the rotation. Tolle has been the replacement for Gray, allowing six hits and four earned runs across two starts with 15 strikeouts and five walks.

With Crochet out for at least two weeks, Boston may call up Jake Bennett from Triple-A Worcester. Bennett was scratched from his most recent start with Worcester, opening the door for him to jump to the main roster.
