McLaren Upgrade Leaves Lando Norris Wanting More

McLaren driver Lando Norris sounded disappointed after a major step forward from the team’s car.

Norris took home the sprint race win in Miami and finished second, a notable step up for McLaren, which brought a serious upgrade package.

McLaren has usually done well at Hard Rock Stadium, and they continued the trend despite struggling at the outset of the season.

Mercedes had gotten away to the best start on the grid, separating themselves from the pack at the top. Ferrari was the best of the rest, and they seemed the best poised to push Mercedes.

However, McLaren’s latest upgrade package ended up being the biggest threat to Mercedes as Piastri finished third, giving the team two out of the top three spots and pushing Kimi Anonteli for the win.

Everything considered, Norris was happy with the team.

“I think I’m just very happy with the situation we’re in, which is we’re fighting for wins or fighting for the win today, a pole, the sprint win,” Norris said.

“So, I think when I look at it from that side, it’s been a very, very strong weekend.

“I feel like I’ve done a very good job the whole weekend too. So, there’s a lot, a lot of positives. And like they just said, we’ve improved such a big amount.”

Norris’ reasons for disappointment

However, a race win was on for McLaren, considering their jump in performance, Norris felt, and he highlighted that Antonelli’s passing him on an undercut was one of the driving forces behind a P2 instead of P1.

“The fact we made such a big step this weekend is great to see,” Norris added.

“But you always have to look at and ask yourself the question, ‘do you feel like you maximized everything today?’ And I’m unsure about that.

“So, I feel like there was a chance that we could have fought better for it.”

Team boss Andrea Stella agreed with the notion, though he felt like it was a team effort that provided both good and bad.

“It is a combination of the driver stopping, the pitstop itself, and then we have the in-lap, and we lost some time in the in-lap as well,” Stella said.

“So, it should not be confused with a strategic element. It is always a team element, and as a team we have done a great job in making McLaren competitive again for the win, and as a team, probably today we didn’t capitalize.”

McLaren have a few more weeks before the Canadian Grand Prix, where another upgrade or two, with better execution of strategy, could get them back on the top step and challenging for the title.
