Mount Pulaski girls basketball coach resigns 'with a heavy heart'

Mount Pulaski girls basketball coach Ryan McVickers submitted a letter of resignation for personal reasons on Monday, May 4.

In the letter shared on the IL SportsWire Facebook page and confirmed by athletic director Joel Washko, McVickers said his 6-year-old son was recently diagnosed with a rare disease and that he needed to spend more time with his son and family.
“The decision comes with a heavy heart,” McVickers said in the letter. “Over the past six years, this program, our players, and this community have meant so much to me. Coaching these young women has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and it is incredibly difficult to step away.
“This program will always hold a special place in my heart. As I step away, I will continue to watch and cheer on these girls with pride knowing the program is in great hands and the future is bright. Thank you for everything.”
The opening was posted on the Illinois Association of School Administrators job bank on May 5. The application deadline is May 15.
McVickers led the Hilltoppers to their second ever state appearance this past season. Mount Pulaski finished second place in Class 1A with a 33-2 record.
He won two additional regional titles and departs with a 138-38 record over his six seasons, including the shortened COVID year.
McVickers did not immediately respond to a text message on Friday.
