Kraaifontein learners protest over foreign nationals turns violent

About 700 learners from Masibambane High School and Hector Peterson High School took to the streets and disrupted Kraaifontein on Wednesday morning during a protest.

They demanded the removal of foreign nationals from their schools and from the country.

During the unrest, some learners allegedly assaulted a foreign national.

Others disrupted public order, targeting motorists and informal traders.

Video footage circulating on social media shows large groups of uniformed learners moving through the streets and looting fruit stalls along the roadside.

Stone-throwing and vehicle damage

Police said some learners threw stones at passing vehicles. Others targeted school personnel’s vehicles, causing further disruption and damage.

Some learners moved towards the Kraaifontein police station and continued to loot stalls and shops along the way, according to reports.

Western Cape police deployed Public Order Police to restore calm and escort learners back to their schools.

Officers were first alerted to the situation at about 08:30 after reports of large groups of learners protesting over the presence of foreign nationals in schools.

Wider tensions over foreign nationals escalate in South Africa

The incident comes amid renewed anti-immigrant protests in parts of South Africa.

Groups, including March and March Movement, have taken to the streets demanding the deportation of undocumented foreign nationals.

The organisation set a 30 June deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country and warned of a possible national shutdown.
