The colourful former enforcer who toiled for the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings, among others, is claiming a “crazy neighbour” fired shots outside his mansion.
Worse, the penalty box frequent flier also alleges his L.A. neighbour tried to “frame” him with “two hookers.”
Contractor building a deck targeted
Taking to Instagram, the 46-year-old said his neighbour fired at the tires of his contractor at his Hollywood Hills home on Tuesday. Avery said the contractor was building a new deck.
“My crazy neighbour shot out the tires of the contractor building a new deck at the house. As this is going on, there’s a standoff at the house. He’s inside. He’s got guns,” Avery breathlessly wrote on Instagram.
And there’s more.
“He calls two hookers and tries to frame me. He sends two hookers up to the house for me — I’m not even there — as a smokescreen,” Avery added.
“The hookers… I don’t even know what’s going on with the election. F***ing Spencer Pratt, the hockey game, the hookers … wow!”
TMZ reports that the LAPD answered a 911 call from Avery’s home around 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The website reported that the neighbour was harassing and threatening the contractors doing renovations.
But when cops arrived it was peace in the valley. Officers were then called back around 5 p.m. on a shots fired call.
Avery, who is attempting to reinvent himself as an actor, was reportedly “on set” filming during the alleged gunplay. His wife, model Hilary Rhoda, was also not home. It wasn’t clear if the twosome’s 5-year-old son, Nash, was in the home.
TMZ said the nasty neighbour was arrested around 6:15 p.m.
Avery spent a dozen seasons in the NHL toiling for the Red Wings, Kings, Stars, and Rangers. He scored 90 goals and added 157 assists in 580 games. But he was better known for racking up penalty minutes and led the league twice in that category.
He retired in 2012.
Avery no stranger to controversy
Throughout his playing career and into retirement, Avery has been no stranger to controversy. And it has run the gamut from being a vengeful cycle Nazi to making scurrilous comments about actress Elisha Cuthbert.
Most recently in 2022, TMZ obtained a video that showed Avery clashing with young people on how they parked outside a residence he was house-sitting in the Hollywood Hills. He accused them of blocking the driveway.
And he delivered a threat that he would tear off the cars windshield wipers.
The man recording the video told Avery he shouldn’t “talk to little kids like that” and he was invited to drop the gloves and fight.
“You can kick or punch me … You’re too f***ing short to actually challenge anyone,” Avery said. “If this was my kid, I’d pull his f***ing hair into the house and I’d tell his dumb f***ing friends to go home.”
Avery’s tart tongue came to prominence when former Toronto Maple Leaf Dion Phaneuf started dating his ex-girlfriend Cuthbert. The agitator said Phaneuf and others around the NHL were getting his “sloppy seconds.”
He was suspended and fined.
