Mets Come Up Punchless Against Padres As They Lose, 3-2, Despite Solid McLean Start

The New York Mets were hoping to build off their Friday night win against the San Diego Padres, but they came up short in the second game of the series, 3-2, despite a strong start by Nolan McLean.
This was yet another pitchers duel, and both starters were strong Nolan McLean and Griffin Canning each allowed a single run, with the Mets scoring first in the second inning on an RBI single by Brett Baty that scored Marcus Semien after Semien singled and A.J. Ewing moved him over to second with another hit.

The Padres countered with a run in the third that was also of the scratched-variety. It started with a walk by Sung-Mun Song, who stole second and was singled home by Fernando Tatis Jr.
Both pitchers gave up three hits and one run, with Canning exiting after the fifth and McLean done after six. That left it in the hands of the relievers, and the Mets broke the tie off Bradgley Rodriguez with a home run by Semien in the seventh to make it 2-1.
That lead didn’t last long, however. It was Song who once again started the rally for San Diego, this time with an infield hit, and Freddy Fermin homered off Mets reliever Austin Warren to make it a 3-2 game.
“Made a good pitch, [Fermin] made a better swing,” Warren said in a piece written by Cole Bradley of MLB.com.
That left the Mets with the formidable task of trying to mount a comeback against Jason Adam and Mason Miller, and both relievers did their respective jobs with scoreless frames that gave the Padres a 3-2 win. Miller picked up his 18th save of the season, with Warren taking the loss for the Mets.
The offense went back to being the problem in this one, as Semien’s homer was the only extra-base hit among their six hits for the night. The top three hitters in the lineup went 1-for-12, with Carson Benge getting the lone single as Juan Soto and Bo Bichette were both shut down.
The Mets were left to take heart in the effort of McLean, who managed to keep his walk total down to three, and the Met starter described himself afterward as “trending in the right direction” by going deeper in the game. The Mets would love to be able to say the same, and they’ll go with Sean Manaea as their starter/bulk reliever today against Randy Vasquez of the Padres in the rubber game.
