The San Antonio Spurs suffered another painful setback against the New York Knicks on Friday night in the NBA Finals. Despite several strong stretches throughout the game, Victor Wembanyama and the young Spurs squad were unable to match the execution, composure, and chemistry displayed by New York’s stars in the closing moments.
Stephon Castle Explains Confusion Behind Wembanyama’s Costly Final Play
San Antonio fought hard to stay within striking distance and nearly pulled off a remarkable comeback, but a critical mistake in the final seconds ultimately proved costly. With an opportunity to put the Spurs in position for a game-winning possession, Wembanyama’s late-game turnover helped seal a heartbreaking 105-104 defeat and gave the Knicks a 2-0 lead in the series.

After Jalen Brunson missed a mid-range shot with roughly 13 seconds remaining, Wembanyama rose above everyone to secure a crucial defensive rebound. The Spurs star quickly attempted an outlet pass to Castle.

With his back turned to Wembanyama, the ball struck him from behind and rolled away, resulting in a devastating turnover at the worst possible moment. Following the game, Castle explained what he saw during the sequence and revealed that he never anticipated the immediate pass from Wembanyama.
“I was looking at him when he first got the rebound and I just started to take off, trying to give him some space to dribble up the court. I didn’t see him throw it to me,” Castle said.
Despite the disappointing finish, Wembanyama delivered another impressive performance. After a relatively quiet opening half, he took over offensively after the break and finished with 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting. He was the driving force behind San Antonio’s fourth-quarter rally from a 14-point deficit and nearly carried his team to an improbable victory.
Victor Wembanyama Accepts Full Responsibility for Game-Changing Turnover
While the turnover involved both players, Wembanyama refused to place any blame on Castle after the loss. Instead, the Spurs superstar openly accepted responsibility for the mistake after the game.
“I threw that one away,” Wembanyama said. “I messed up.The last three possessions are blurry. That’s the whole problem. I need to have more poise, more control over the game. Am I gonna regret it? Yes, of course. Am I gonna use that to fuel me and to fuel us? Absolutely.”
Wembanyama also addressed the emotional challenge of recovering from such a crushing defeat.
“Personally, I think I could’ve been better in recovering from the high of the Conference Finals, but here we are,” he said. “We can’t change the past now. We’re already focused on Game 3.”
Now trailing 0-2 in the series and heading into a hostile environment at Madison Square Garden, the Spurs face an uphill battle. If San Antonio hopes to climb back into the Finals, Wembanyama and the rest of the young roster will need to eliminate costly mistakes in the games ahead.
