JJ Bleday once had a major prospect pedigree, but he never quite lived up to that.

Now, though, he's having a great season for the Cincinnati Reds. He's worked out as an awesome offseason acquisition.

The only problem is that the Reds aren't playing as well as they might've hoped. If Bleday keeps hitting like this, but the Reds keep scuffling a bit, he might actually wind up as a trade candidate.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand wrote a new article on Friday in which he named nine players he's watching in the trade market, and the first name on the list was Bleday.

"Bleday is off to the best start of his five-year career, hitting 11 home runs with 29 RBIs and a .930 OPS in 39 games after spending the first month of the season at Triple-A," Feinsand writes. "The 28-year-old is earning $1.4 million this season and is under club control for two more seasons, and while he could be a key cog in the Reds’ lineup moving forward, he could also be an appealing trade chip if Cincinnati opts to be a seller this summer."

Bleday's contract would be particularly appealing for an acquiring team, particularly a smaller market club. A team like the Milwaukee Brewers or Cleveland Guardians might not really want to pay half a season on a huge contract for a veteran being moved from a seller. But for Bleday's deal? He could work out as an ideal outfield solution.

Cincinnati would surely prefer to turn things around and not have to think about dealing away a player who looks like a successful signing like this, but the NL Central is uber-competitive, and someone eventually is going to pay the price for that.

Bleday likely wasn't sure what kind of opportunity he'd get with the Reds, and him starting the season in Triple-A proves the uncertainty they had around him, too.

Now, though, he's looking like he could be a key piece before the trade deadline this summer.
