Green, a four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors, played against the talented big man in multiple games over the course of three seasons. He’s also familiar with Wemby’s background, which he suggested is part of how he plays the game.

A mailbag featuring fan questions sent to “The Draymond Green Show” included someone asking if Green thought Wemby’s shove on New York Knicks guard Jalen should’ve been a flagrant foul.

Green said he realized the NBA is showing the Spurs star “grace” so they’ll have their best player on the court as fans watch the biggest series of the playoffs. He added that he wished the NBA would admit they just want to have the best players out on the court for the series, so they were making exceptions.

In another fan question, someone brought up a play where Wemby jumped to defend against the Knicks’ OG Anunoby, and Wemby’s foot nearly took out Anunoby’s leg.

“Here’s what I’ll say. Victor Wembanyama is a great player. Victor Wembanyama is a European player, and I’ve been on record saying European players are dirty,” Green said. “Draymond will [expletive] you up. I’m not dirty. It’s a completely different thing.”

“Victor Wembanyama is a European player. They are a bit dirty,” he said, alluding to how there are differences in American and international basketball.

Talking about his own game, Green reiterated that he personally isn’t dirty. Green suggested fans could also ask many other players, and they would agree he’s not dirty. However, he believes Wemby plays a bit dirtier due to his hoops background.

Whether or not that’s true remains unclear, as Wemby has dealt with a lot of physicality throughout the playoffs and responded. He began playing professional basketball in France at age 15, and continued playing for various professional clubs there until he went first overall to the Spurs in 2023.

Down 1-3 to the Knicks, the Spurs are on the brink of elimination, so they will most likely be fighting for every rebound, loose ball, and being aggressive on defense in an effort to keep their championship dreams alive. However, Wemby will need to use caution in Game 5 and, should there be one, in Game 6.

While Wemby didn’t receive a flagrant foul for shoving Brunson, he’s received three during the NBA Playoffs, including one recently in the NBA Finals. If he should receive a fourth, he’d automatically be suspended for at least one game.

That would be a massive detriment to the San Antonio Spurs, as it would likely wrap up the championship in a bow for the New York Knicks.

It’s also intriguing to see how much grace the NBA will give him as he continues his career, as he wasn’t suspended earlier in the playoffs after being ejected for a flagrant for elbowing the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Naz Reid.

NBA Finals Game 5 takes place in San Antonio, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
