Former Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendan Sorsby is expected to enter his name into the upcoming NFL supplemental draft, according to a USA TODAY report.

Sorsby, who had been considered a potential NFL draft first-round pick in 2027, played the past two seasons for the Bearcats after spending his first two seasons at Indiana University. Sorsby left UC for Texas Tech, which he chose over LSU.

Sorsby placed at least 40 bets involving IU football while quarterback for the Hoosiers, used sportsbook accounts registered to a family member and friends to wager approximately $90,000 over four years and continued to gamble after transferring from UC to Texas Tech, according to ESPN.

What is the NFL supplemental draft?

The supplemental draft was created in 1977 for draft-eligible players who failed to declare for the regular NFL draft.

The NFL doesn't hold a supplemental draft every year.

The league only has a supplemental draft when players are eligible. Players declaring for the supplemental draft usually do so because of an issue involving college eligibility.

NFL supplemental draft history includes Hall of Famer Cris Carter.

No eligible player was selected in 2023.

The last time a player was selected in a supplemental draft was in 2019, when the Arizona Cardinals picked safety Jalen Thompson.

The Cleveland Browns selected receiver Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft in 2012; the Raiders selected Terrelle Pryor in 2011; the Philadelphia Eagles selected former Middletown High School standout Cris Carter in 1987.

Carter is the only supplemental draft pick elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The last quarterback to be selected in an NFL supplemental draft was Ohio State's Pryor. The Raiders selected Pryor in the third round of that supplemental draft.

Pryor had been dismissed from Ohio State because of NCAA violations related to the sale of memorabilia.

Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Pryor for five games as a condition of his eligibility, meaning Pryor couldn't practice or play with the Raiders until the team's sixth game of the 2011 regular season.

How does the NFL supplemental draft work?

Any NFL team selecting Sorsby, or anyone else, in a supplemental draft would forfeit a draft pick.

The supplemental draft order is determined by a lottery system related to win-loss record from the previous season.

The draft order is divided into three groups: Teams with six or fewer wins; other non-playoff teams; and the 14 playoff teams.

A team expresses interest in drafting a player by bidding on that player in a certain round.

If multiple teams submit bids in the same round, the team picking first in the draft order gets the player.

The team loses its pick in the same round of the regular draft that it used in the supplemental draft.

The NFL supplemental draft could be held in July.

If there are eligible players, the draft would take place on or before the seventh day before the opening of the first training camp.

That would place a supplemental draft sometime in early-to-mid July.

Which NFL teams could bid on Sorsby in the supplemental draft?

The Cincinnati Bengals were among the 10 teams to win six or fewer games last season, along with the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, New Orleans Saints and Kansas City Chiefs.

Browns head coach Todd Monken indicated June 2 that he wouldn't be inclined to select Sorsby in the NFL's supplemental draft, if Sorsby entered it.

Of the 10 teams with six or fewer wins in 2025, the Jets appear to have the most open starting QB competition.

Geno Smith, traded to the Jets during the 2026 NFL Draft, was 2-13 in 15 starts for the Raiders last season, with 19 touchdowns and a league-leading 17 interceptions.
