Finally, he got it.
Topping, a Boston College swimming signee, captured the TISCA swimming state championship in the boys 50-yard freestyle on Feb. 6 with a time of 20.14.
“I hit the wall and I didn’t think it was real,” Topping said. “I’ve been looking forward to this meet all year. Very happy to finally achieve one of my lifelong goals, or at least of the last four years. I’m just over the moon.”
Topping held off Baylor School’s Ethan Gover, who finished in 20.30 on a night Baylor surged into the overall team lead with 167 points.
The TISCA swimming state finals will conclude Feb. 7 at Centennial Sportsplex.
“I’m definitely the type of guy who hates losing more than I enjoy winning,” Topping said. “I imagined myself losing last night and kind of came away OK with that fact, so I just came out here with nothing to lose.”
Topping also placed third in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing in 47.34 behind MBA’s Hutch Paxton (47.21) and Baylor’s Hayden Vicknair (46.91).
“I think when you’re someone who’s always been close to being in the hunt, (winning) is a huge deal,” Ensworth coach Christian Bahr. “To execute and get it done, it’s huge.”
Brentwood Academy’s Faith Gorey wins 1st state title
Gorey, an Alabama commitment, competed for Carmel High School in Indiana last season. Her family moved back to Middle Tennessee this past year.
She made a big impression in her Nashville return.
The Brentwood Academy junior won the girls 200 free with a time of 1:47.25, holding off two of the top swimmers in the meet. She bested Father Ryan’s Libby Helmer (1:50.19), a South Carolina commitment, and Station Camp’s Zara Kocak (1:50.75), who’s committed to Indiana.
It was harder than Gorey made it look.
“I have a sinus infection kind of right now, so I wasn't feeling 100% going into this,” Gorey said. “There was just a lot of fatigue. It’s a little harder to stay in the water.”
Houston twins Eva, Roos Rottink cherish final TISCA titles together
Houston’s Eva Rottink and twin sister Roos have been training partners all their lives, but will go their separate ways next year. Eva signed with Indiana for swimming and Roos will compete at Virginia.
They shared one last night of title glory together. Roos won the girls 50 free with a time of 22.67. Eva won the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.88.
As sophomores, Eva won the 100 backstroke and Roos won the 100 butterfly
“I feel like (next year) will be a big adjustment,” Eva said. “But we really wanted to be separate since we’ve always been kind of like two peas in a pod. We kind of want our own experience in college.”
Maryville’s Ellie Stanley wins second straight 200 IM title
Stanley won the 200 individual medley as a freshman and proved it was no fluke.
She cruised in the final, finishing in 2:00.15 in front of runner-up and Indiana commitment Bryce Winzenread (2:01.94).
“I wouldn’t say (winning the second title) is harder,” Stanley said. “I just felt really determined like I wanted to win again, so I think that helped.”
Stanley also placed second in the 100 fly with a time of 53.45.
