While they're not quite out of things just yet, it wouldn't be a surprise if the Mets failed to reach the postseason this year. And more importantly, they also might act as sellers at this year's trade deadline.
But the big question revolves around what to do with Freddy Peralta, who is going to be a free agent after 2026. However, Will Sammon of The Athletic shared an opinion of Peralta's on his looming free agency that should lead to the Mets trading their ace.
Mets should trade Freddy Peralta after free agency opinion revealed
Sammon shared that, after being asked if he would have interest in coming back to the Mets in free agency even if they traded him by this year's deadline, Peralta had a simple response: "Yes."
This free agency stance from Peralta makes it abundantly clear that the Mets should very much entertain any trade offers for Peralta this season.
Even if the 2026 season is a disaster, the Mets could get something back in a trade for their ace and then sign him over the offseason to a long-term deal.

Obviously, there's a bit of risk with this move, as the Mets might end up losing Peralta to a new team in free agency or to the team they traded him to.
But the risk is worth the reward. The Mets could get a decent return for a half-season rental of Peralta, and still sign him to a long-term deal after 2026 comes to a close.
Amid such a disastrous season, the Mets need to find little ways to win, and being able to trade Peralta but still sign him in free agency would be about the best possible outcome for the Mets with their new ace.
