About a year ago, the New England Patriots brought Stefon Diggs aboard.

The former Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans wide receiver was signed in free agency to a three-year deal to be Drake Maye's WR1.

Diggs lasted just a single season with the Pats.

He was a quality target for Maye, and New England reached the Super Bowl, but the Patriots decided this offseason that they couldn't pay Diggs what his contract called upon for the next two seasons, and so they cut him.

Diggs remains a free agent as the NFL calendar turns to June, and he looms in an interesting way as the Patriots appear to close in on a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for star wideout A.J. Brown.

Some Patriots followers on social media have speculated that if a Brown deal were to fall through, New England might bring Diggs back. But at the moment, the chances of Brown not getting dealt to the Pats seem low.

If a Brown trade does happen, potentially as soon as Monday night or Tuesday morning, it will rule out one possible destination for Diggs.

He's in that spot in his career where he can certainly take his time. Diggs doesn't have to rush signing anywhere.

Eventually, a spot will become clear and obvious as providing ample opportunity for Diggs to make a difference.

It just seemed, a year ago, that he might get to settle in New England for multiple seasons, going up against his former Bills in two AFC East games a year.

Instead, Diggs is now looking for a new NFL home, and a Brown deal would mean the Patriots won't be able to provide a return.

Diggs will land on his feet, but he serves as a reminder that sometimes, moves that look like long-term commitments don't actually fit that bill.
