Mets Routed By Reds, 12-0, As Myers Flops Badly As Opener In Cincinnati Series

· Yahoo Sports

The New York Mets had some momentum coming into the opening game of their three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds, but Tobias Myers quickly killed it off as he got blasted by the Reds for nine runs in the first two innings of what wound up being a 12-0 loss.

This one was over very early. The Reds have been slumping badly since Elly De La Cruz went out with an injury, but you wouldn’t have known it tonight as they feasted on a variety of Myers meatballs.

The Mets opener couldn’t control his breaking ball, and Cincinnati put three runs on the board in the first, with the first run scoring on an RBI  groundout by Spencer Steer. Eugenio Suarez then added a two-run homer to make it 3-0, Reds.

Things got worse for Myers in the second as he loaded the bases with nobody out, then walked home a run to ensure his quick exit. Sal Stewart delivered an RBI single off new reliever Jonathan Pintaro to make it 5-0, and Suarez blew the game open with a grand slam to make it a 9-0 blowout.

The Reds had Chase Burns on the mound, and he struggled with his command but managed to throw five shutout innings. His final line wasn’t as impressive as usual, as he gave up four hits and struck out seven to go with three walks while throwing 100 pitches.

The Mets mostly mailed it in after they got buried in that 9-0 hole, as they loaded the bases in three separate innings but managed to come up empty in all three. They also got six walks from Reds pitchers, but this was a night of futility as the Mets blew a variety of opportunities to at least get on the board and offer some resistance.

The Reds added a little salt to the wound via a three-run blast by JJ Bleday in the eighth off David Peterson, who was held back for several innings so he can back up Kodai Senga as Senga returns to the mound for the second game of the series. That made it 12-0 for the evening, and the lone bright spot for the Mets was Bo Bichette, who had a three-hit game that included a pair of doubles.

It was yet another humiliating game for the Mets, who once again proved they’re going nowhere fast as they took a big step back after winning their weekend series against the Atlanta Braves
