Lions TE Sam LaPorta 'trending the right way' for training camp
· Yahoo Sports
On the first day of the Detroit Lions' mandatory minicamp, star tight end Sam LaPorta was a partial participant.
That tracks with the rest of this spring, where LaPorta has been limited to light jogging and walk-through work throughout OTAs. LaPorta underwent back surgery last November on a herniated disc that he sustained during the Lions' Week 10 win over the Washington Commanders.

Asked if LaPorta would be ready for the start of camp, Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared a promising update.

"We like where he's going. He's trending the right way," Campbell said.
LaPorta is up for a contract extension this summer. ESPN's Adam Schefter sounded optimistic last month on the Lions' prospects of getting an extension done with both LaPorta and running back Jahmyr Gibbs this offseason.
Most importantly for Detroit, they need LaPorta back on the field and healthy as they look to make a run back to the top of the NFC North and into Super Bowl contention.
LaPorta burst onto the scene with 889 yards and 10 touchdowns on 86 catches during his rookie campaign in 2023. The 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end was a Pro Bowler and earned second-team All-Pro status in 2023.
LaPorta followed up his rookie campaign with 60 receptions for 726 yards and seven scores in 2024. Then, in just nine games last year, LaPorta hauled in 40 grabs for 489 yards and three touchdowns.
